A winning mentality lifts our Multi-Asset Funds to new heights
Success is a marriage between good strategy and a winning mentality. This creates a unique framework that can result in teams winning titles against all odds, even after having survived a relegation battle the year before (think Leicester City).
Instilling the winning mentality
Let’s take for example, the England Rugby Team. Despite having a strong, capable and promising squad, the team lacked a common unity and suffered an embarrassing exit from the group stages in the 2015 Rugby World Cup – which England even hosted. What was missing? A winning mentality.
Eddie Jones was brought in as the new coach following the exit. He had already impressed during the same campaign, by leading Japan to victory against South Africa (also against all odds). Eddie Jones, whose management philosophy earned him an advisory role at Goldman Sachs, brought England back to winning ways. He is feared but respected – with admirable facial muscles as he seems to be smiling a lot (life goals).
He instilled that winning mentality within the team. Even when the scoreboard was red in the dying moments, Eddie engendered a team-belief that they will still win regardless. This bold confidence saw England win back to back 6 Nations Championships (2016 – 2017) as well as a world record unbeaten run shared with the mighty New Zealand All Blacks.
The art of success
This winning mentality is fostered by his ability to build blooming relationships. He guides and believes in his players – even reinvigorating a few who thought they may be past it. This is what he calls the art of success; “The art is all about relationships” – as he explained in an FT article. The science is marrying this winning mentality with a well-thought-out strategy / game plan, to win every game.
His aura of success has even rubbed off on other coaches in other sports, with Antonio Conte (Chelsea FC club coach) saying that he ‘inculcated a winning mentality’ after meeting Eddie Jones – now look where they are. Chelsea just won the 2017 Premier League title after failing to capitalise on their strengths in their previous campaign.
A strategy towards success
Similarly at Russell Investments, we combine strategy with a winning mentality that transcends into all teams that form our multi-asset proposition. A strategy towards success only materialises when a winning mentality drives the team. Over the years, our multi-asset funds have managed to consistently outperform their respective benchmarks, rewarding you on the upside and protecting you on the downside – which the following graphs depict.

How was this winning mentality fostered at Russell Investments?
What most people don’t see from the above graphs is the relevant drive that underpinned Russell Investments’ success.
Diversity & Inclusion
One overt example is our Diversity & Inclusion Committee who seek to actively empower colleagues (through meetings and workshops) to make them feel part of – and own – the Russell Investments story. Equally, our open-door management philosophy enables engagement between colleagues from all levels and backgrounds.
Cross-fertilisation of ideas
Through this form of holistic interaction, you enable the successful cross-fertilisation of ideas across the teams on a global basis. This builds up momentum fuelled by a winning mentality, that converts our multi-asset strategy into a win. And ultimately a win for us is a win for you.
Our multi-asset strategy is the “how” and our ubiquitous winning mentality the “why”, that sets our Multi-Asset Funds up for future success.
An intelligent solution
Our successful multi-asset strategy as an intelligent solution for your clients’ needs, is something we are very proud of. When markets blow headwinds, not only are our funds equipped with downside protection, but crucially, our colleagues hold a winning mentality that gives us an edge to ensure that our strategy reaches its full destiny – success.
